Short Horror Movie Review: I Baked Him a Cake

A Short Review of I Baked Him a Cake

By Paul Maritz

I Baked Him a Cake, written and produced by Samantha Kolesnik and directed by Vanessa Ionta Wright, is a short horror film of exceptional high quality.

Lenora – Daddy’s  little girl.

The story, the score (music), the cinematography, the special effects, the actors and more came together to deliver what can best be described as an atmospheric masterpiece. Lillian Gray, starring as “Lenora” – the young girl who prepares for her father’s birthday in trying circumstances (the narrative) – and Fleece, starring as “Mother,” both deliver a convincing performance.

I Baked Him a Cake – Official Poster.

“The film was adapted from a short story by Samantha Kolesnik, which was published in the Spring 2016 issue of Hypnos Magazine. Ross Childress, former lead guitarist for Collective Soul, composed the score for the film. Henrik A. Meyer was the Cinematographer. All special effects were practical, and were done by special effects artist Nadine Al-Remaizan. The sets and art design were by Emily Chomuik, and the film was edited by Brandon Taylor. Samantha Kolesnik and director Vanessa Ionta Wright also collaborated on 2017 horror release Rainy Season (www.rainyseasonmovie.com) which is hitting festivals now, and they both co-founded the Women in Horror Film Festival (www.wihff.com).”

A monthly affair – business as usual?

I don’t wish to get too deep into it here, fearing that I might spoil it for those who haven’t seen the full film – 5 minutes of horror heaven. I will add this much: “Is there anything stronger in this world than a mother’s love?”

A convincing performance by Fleece (“Mother”) and Lillian Gray (“Lenora”).

It is my sincere wish to see I Baked Him a Cake end up as a feature film on the big screen – to expand, to fill in the blanks, to give women in horror the recognition they deserve, but perhaps most importantly, to send a clear message out there: A strong woman will fuck you up!

Can you have your cake and eat it too?

I feel comfortable to give I Baked Him a Cake a rating of 8/10.

Support the film. Help to spread the word:
