THE DUMMY (1982) Short Horror Film – HBO & USA Network Saturday Nightmares – Lou LaVolpe

THE DUMMY (1982) Short Horror Film – HBO & USA Network Saturday Nightmares – Lou LaVolpe – “The Dummy” is a 1982 student film picked up by HBO, TMC, and Showtime in the early days of cable TV. It received extensive play for almost ten years, more than any other short film. It was often used as a bumper between horror movies and inspired the Chucky “Child’s Play” movies. “The Dummy” was the source of nightmares for a generation of kids watching late night television in the 1980s. If you are one of them, please share it with us! In 2013, “The Dummy” was once again picked up for cable play by FearNet. Although 30 years old and extremely “low-tech” in this day of CGI effects, it is still fun to watch. The film is shown here in its entirety, with permission.

Great movie I saw when I was younger and not longer bear dolls in the room, especially when sleeping!

Holy shit. I can’t believe I came across this. I remember seeing this on USA, when it was still channel 14. I was really little & it creeped me out, bad. Parts of it stuck in my memory, kind of like that episode of the twilight zone, with the thing on the wing of the plane. Same creepiness.

Thanks so much for posting this! I remember USA’s Saturday Nightmares showing this after the 8PM movie when they had to fill space before Alfred Hitchcock / Ray Bradbury / The Hitchhiker. There was also a shorter "comedy" one of a guy fishing by a lake: a monster fish or something (you never see it) throws a candy bar with a hook in it on shore, and the fisherman ends up being dragged into the depths.

I thought I was the only one creeped out by this dummy! I remember watching it on either Night Flight or some other pre-MTV show and it scared the bejesus out of me. We just watched it again the other day as part of some fear-fest and everyone laughed at me for being unnerved by it!

  31. alquemy says:

I saw this on Night Flight on the USA Network in the early 80’s.  I was always nervous this would come on whenever I watched Night Flight (which was almost every Friday and Saturday until I started going out as a teenager), but still looked forward to it

  32. seattlejayde says:

Reminded me of a similar short horror film with Karen Black…but it was a little creature in her aptmt that terrorized her and not a dummy, good short!

  33. Corambe says:

Nice enough. I like the use of not having the actor’s faces in the movie at first [Gives it a little mood]. And the actress looks nice. The Dummy is pretty scary too, nice job.
